Summary

A shout comes echoing up the stairway。 "Fetch the whipping boy!"

A young orphan named Jemmy rouses from his sleep。 "Ain't I already been whipped twice today? Gaw! What's the prince done now?" It was forbidden to spank, thrash, or whack the heir to the throne。 Jemmy had been plucked from the streets to serve as whipping boy to the arrogant and spiteful Prince Brat。

Dreaming of running away, Jemmy finds himself trapped in Prince Brat's own dream at once brash and perilous。

In this briskly told tale of high adventure, taut with suspense and rich with colorful characters, the whipping boy and Prince Brat must at last confront each other。

Award-winning author Sid Fleischman again blends the broadly comic with the deeply compassionate in this memorable novel。

Jacqueline

A short, 90-page story based on the fact that there were once real boys who would be whipped on behalf of royalty。 Cute story。

Johanna

Cute short children’s book。 Kind of an abrupt ending。 Might be good for a read aloud for 2nd or 3rd grade。

This is a classic - I remember my dad reading it to me as a kid, and loved reading it to my kids as well。 Very short and fast-moving, with two or three-page chapters and surprising character growth for a 90-page book。

This wasn’t one of my favorite books I would say there is much better。 I read this book in elementary school learning about the Middle Ages。 From page one I thought this book was cruel but the truth。 I’d rather read a more interesting book m。 I’d recommend this book only to people who like adventure and cruelty in a story。

I read this for my daughter’s school book club。 After I read it, I handed it to her and said, “That was some weird sh*t。”

What a delightful, beguiling book for young people as well as 76-year-olds like me! This Newbery Medal winner has memorable characters, a fast paced plot, and lots of laughs。 And, in a pleasantly unobtrusive way, deals with issues like privilege and class。 No youthful angst, no burning social problems, just fun。

This is a fun little book I read to my 7 yr old daughter。 There are a few good life lessons in here worth reading about。

I am surprised this won the Newbery Medal—the girls and I were so bored。 We would have stopped if it hadn’t been so short。 Brody liked it though!

Such a simple story but it’s always stayed with me and the kids loved it too。 Pairs well with a Sunday watching The Princess Bride。

I read this book to a group of sixth graders。 Who doesn't like a story with a great moral and some valuable lessons? The reading is tough at times because the dialogue used is trying to capture the language at that time。 Overall, I think the students liked the book and I hope they got the message behind the story。 I read this book to a group of sixth graders。 Who doesn't like a story with a great moral and some valuable lessons? A cute, short listen with short chapters。 Of course, as an adult it seems ludicrous that a boys character can do a 180 in 2 days, but in the course of the story it works。

Prince Brat wants some adventure。 He is tired of the pranks and general havoc he wreaks。 So he gets his whipping boy to go with him。It's a little reminiscent of the Prince and the Pauper, but in this case the boys stay together。 It is an enjoyable read。 Prince Brat wants some adventure。 He is tired of the pranks and general havoc he wreaks。 So he gets his whipping boy to go with him。It's a little reminiscent of the Prince and the Pauper, but in this case the boys stay together。 It is an enjoyable read。 。。。more

3。5 starsThis was a very quick and easy read (with parts that even surprised me), recommended for those learning English。 Although it was short, I appreciated the general idea of the story, and the last part did make me smile, to be honest。

Great read for 4th graders with great idea discussions

Got one last in before midnight。 My sister loves Fleischman。 He was yet another kids author I missed。 Good story, quick YA tale。 I’m going to try to get Holmes to read it。

Newbery Medal Winner- 1987A misbehaving Prince (Prince Brat) puts his poor whipping boy through a lot because the Prince can’t actually be punished。。。 bring out the whipping boy! (What a horrible thing- I can’t believe anyone ever thought that was a good idea。) But the Prince gets bored and runs away taking his whipping boy as a servant。 What develops is adventure and developing a great friendship。 *Spoiler* Prince Brat isn’t so much of a brat any more。

Steve Scordino

I loved this book as a kid。 It teaches strong lessons。 I introduced my older son to it at about 8-9 years old and he really like it as well。

Jamie

This was light and entertaining, and short as well。 Very good for boys who are reluctant readers。

The Whipping Boy by Sid Fleischman is a Newbery Medal-winning novel for young children, but the message is relevant to all ages。 The king's son is a spoiled brat, but whenever he does something wrong, he is not whipped; Jemmy--an urchin brought in from the streets--is whipped instead! So what does the Prince Brat learn? Absolutely nothing。。。that is, until the boys are kidnapped! An interesting lesson taught in a great book! YOU CANNOT WHIP A PRINCE! It is punishable by death! But prince Horace is a spoiled brat who wont do his lesson and is alway making mischief。 They call him Prince Brat, behind his back of course。 if anyone needs a whipping it is Prince Brat。 So what is the solution, take an orphan from the street and make him the official whipping boy to stand-in for the prince's punishments。 Unfortunately for Jemmy, the stand-in is him, and he is sure to whipped at least 3 or 4 times each day。 Until one day the YOU CANNOT WHIP A PRINCE! Or will he find a friendship with the prince that is more important than escape? This was a sweet story about loyalty, trust, and friendship。 It is definitely written for elementary age kids rather than YA。 There are a lot of fun historical references, including the whipping boy himself。 Apparently they really use to assign a whipping boy to royalty when they needed to be punished。 How well do you think they learned their lesson when someone else was taking their whipping? The book was descriptive with colorful vocabulary that we occasional had to look up to find out historically what they meant。 I read it with my 5th grader for a book report and he was able to pull out good quotes to express the setting, plot, and climax。 Just a fun quick read (or it would have been rather, we were doing 2 or 3 chapters a night。) 。。。more
